Industrial wastewaters and limit values

Sewage discharges

Drainage shall not result in:

  • Substances that endanger the safety of sewer workers e.g. gasoline, solvents or substances that cause fire and explosion hazards.
  • Hazardous waste (e.g. paint and metal deposits, waste oils, fixtures, developments, used coolant fluids or washing machine waste fluids from workshop parts).
  • Substances for which specific provisions are laid down in government decisions or official regulations, e.g. pesticides.
  • Blocking solids or other substances that damage the operation of sewers, pumping stations or treatment plants, treatment and recovery of sewage sludge, or discharge water.

Limit values

MetalMaximum content (mg/l)
Arsenic (As)0,1
Mercury (Hg)0,01
Silver (Ag)0,1
Cadmium (Cd)0,01
Total chromium (Cr)0,5
Chromium VI (Cr6+)0,1
Copper (Cu)0,5
Lead (Pb)0,5
Nickel (Ni)0,5
Zinc (Zn)2
Tin (Sn)2

Other substance specific limit values

pH value6,0-9,0
Temperature30 ºC
Sulphate, thiosulfate, sulphite (sum value)400 mg/l
Total cyanide0,5 mg/l
Formaldehyde0,5 mg/l
Fat100 mg/l
Total hydrocarbon content (C10-C40)100 mg/l

Case-specific limit values may be set if it proves necessary for the operation of a sewer network or treatment plant, e.g. pH number, solids, metals, BHK7 (biological oxygen consumption) or substances interfering with nitrogen removal.

Instructions for solvents

Drainage shall not result in:

  • Highly flammable, flammable and water insoluble solvents (e.g. diethyl ether, petroleum ether, cyclohexane).
  • Chlorinated solvents (e.g. trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, methylene chloride, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride).

Limit values

Chlorine-free VOCs (e.g. toluene and xylene)

  • The total amount of waste water discharged into the sewer network shall not exceed 3 mg/l of the compounds in question.

Government decrees must also be taken into account when discharging wastewater that deviates from normal residential waste water into the sewer:

  • Government Decree on Substances Dangerous and Harmful to the Aquatic Environment 1022/2006 and 868/2010
  • Government Decree on Environmental Protection 713/2014 (41§)

Only detergents belonging to a single combination of detergents may be used at the filling station at the same time.

Industrial companies must take into account the quality limitations of wastewater discharged into the Kymen Vesi network. By taking care of the limit values for industrial wastewater, we prevent, among other things, harmful effects in sewer networks and in the further treatment of water.
